If you are a large company, consider the use of an enterprise output management (EOM) system. Such systems take spool output from SAP over BC-XOM (SAP 4.0C and onwards), and can enhance the content, delivering page level feedback about the print status back to SAP visible in SP01. Typically you will use the SAPGOFU SAP device type , and use the transform technology in the EOM to create the correct output stream for the end device (PDL).  It means you have placed an abstraction layer between the hardware (printers) and the software (applications systems creating output). For large customers such an abstraction is advantageous, as it removes the requirement for output problems and set up to be dealt with by experts (like SAP Basis), rather, this work can be moved to cheaper personel. In addition as SAP drivers are not being used, application spool server cycles for formatting can be offloaded to a cheaper platform, and there are no driver (device type), Platform, or SAP release based restrictions. Finally, no SIMMS/DIMMS are required as the EOM will achieve the required PDL using its own software.

I "declare an interest" as I work for a company producing EOM systems  ;-) ...
